Concept Statement
For this production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, I aimed to encapsulate the enchanting charm and whimsy of a southern bayou backyard,
rich with both nostalgia and allure. The architecture stands as a testament to generations of family history, exuding a well-loved, weathered, and grand presence.
The swampy elements weave through the landscape, introducing a sense of mystery and magic. Combined these elements evoke the warmth and intimacy of a
close-knittown, where stories linger in the air and secrets are whispered amongst the trees. Ultimately my design invites the audience to immerse themselves in a world where dreams take root amidst the rich tapestry of southern charm, celebrating the beauty and magic that emerges when nature and nostalgia intertwine.

The Trees:
I do find it fun to scenic charge my own shows occasionally. I find myself having a special place in my heart for the shows that I do. I usually can get a gauge of what is achievable for an 8-day schedule. The team in the scene shop for this production was 1 scenic charge and artist (me) and 2 carpenters (The TD and ATD). For this production I got to do one of my favorite things which is to papier-mâché3D texture to create depth on the scenery for the lighting designer to play with. To achieve the trees, I first started with wet blending my darker wood tones directly on the Broadway style flats. Then I created a white glue and latex paint mixture to apply the pieces of brown butcher paper. Utilizing the Iowa sun, these flats baked outside and were completely dry in 30 minutes. I finished them off with a healthy dose of spatter with an addition of some shadows and a dry brush of highlight.
